One day in our hidden Siem Reap...

1/ Breakfast served at the Bayon Pastry School

Our favorite pastries in Siem Reap ! Located in a little street perpendicular at Taphul Street, the Bayon Pastry School is a cosy Café where you can lounge on sofas in a green environment and a family atmosphere. Created in 2014, Bayon school offers to underprivileged young girl, interested by the pastry profession, a one-year program. Courses are financed by NGO donations and the Café revenues.

We suggest you taste the chocolate-passion pie alongside with the excellent home-made lemonade. If you stay in Siem Reap for the weekend, you should definitively have a Sunday brunch here as well. Not only the meals are delicious but you will have free access to board games! A return to childhood both tasty and healthy.

2/ Shopping and walking in Kandal Village

Try the best coffee in town at the Red Fox, or a refreshing juice at The Hive, and then stroll around in this charming area full of art galleries, spas, fashion stores and socials initiatives venues. Khmers products and cosmopolitan designs mix together will satisfy all your desire and suit every budget.

In this dynamic and artistic quarter, you will also find our shop, Soieries du Mékong open in January 2017. We will be happy to welcome you in our colorful and cosy store, should you be interested in learning more about traditional hand-weaving, or discover our silk creations. Here, you can also donate goods and supplies to Enfants du Mékong humanitarian centers !

3/ Gastronomic lunch at Sala Bai Hostel and restaurant

Make the most of your stay in Siem Reap by having lunch in a gastronomic restaurant at a fair price! Sala Bai is a catering school which trains every year a hundred of underprivileged Cambodians with a restaurant and a hostel to give students the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. The school’s magnificent architecture and its clean and graphic design, has been thought in a pragmatic way to optimize every part of the place. A little extra: you can take a tour of the school and have a look at the welcoming and dynamic atmosphere of this interesting and attractive project.

Look out, the school is open only for breakfast and lunch service. If you are looking for a high flavor and tasty gastronomic restaurant for the evening, go to the famous Wat Damnak. It’s only open at night and you should get a reservation (the restaurant is often full).

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, from 7 :00 AM to 9 :00 AM for breakfast and 12h :00 to 2 :00 PM for lunch.



4/ Cultural excursion out in 1961

1961 is a cultural spot at every level: coworking space bringing together people willing to develop new ideas, an art gallery and a curiosity cabinet with items intended for sales. This place is an authentic collaborative and inspiring venue! Walk around and admire the different artwork and skim over art magazine made available while enjoying a coffee. We recommend that you try the yoga initiation at sunrise, in a wonderful wooden room surrounded by large painting: nothing better to start of the day!

Opening hours: every day from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Yoga lessons from Monday to Friday at 6:00 AM


5/ Traditional cooking class at Champey

Located in front of the Old Market, Champey restaurant offers traditional Cambodian cooking courses in a simple and pleasant atmosphere. You will then be able to cook a perfect Amok as a real khmer! After some client expressed concerns that they could not find the same flavors at home, the restaurant even decided to propose tours of the Old Market to discover local products, followed by a cooking class supervise by a recognized Chief. The chief cheerfulness brings an unparalleled conviviality in the course and laugh gets quickly contagious. You will then be free to taste your delicious dmeal and get ready an explosion of tastes in the palate!

6/ A relaxation time at Sokkhak Spa

After a walk in the city center, a massage and a quality body treatment at Sokkhak Spa will be perfect to finish the day on high note. Ranked by Trip Advisor as the best spa in Siem Reap, this establishment is run by a team both welcoming and professional. Their expertise and their quality oils, will send you in a state of trance. Body treatments are home-made from local fruits and vegetables. Editorial advice:  go to Sokkhak restaurant before the massage, and get a 15% discount and a free tucktuck to the Spa.

PS: If Sokkhak Spa is full and you really need a massage, try the Khmer Relief Spa. This spa offers sophisticated setting, with local and natural products and is are also high recommended.

7/ Insect-appetizers tasting at Bugs

You cannot travel to Siem Reap without trying entomophagy, which may be the solution of the future to feed the planet in the years to come?

Bugs is THE best place to taste grasshopper appetizers or to enjoy silkworm-larva cupcakes… among other delicacies. For the most audacious, the “special mix” will allow you to try a large variety of insects cooked with sophisticated and delicious sauce. This is definitely more tasteful than the insects sold in Pub Street!

The manager is a passionate man and will be happy to help you analyse what you find on your plate. Overall, Bugs is a good address for audacious gourmet.

8/ A touching and funny show at Phare Cambodian circus

It’s probably the less unknow attraction of our list, but surely one of the best in Siem Reap. It fully deserves a place in our podium because leaving Siem Reap without seeing the Phare Circus would be to miss an unforgettable show. Both dramatic, poetic, acrobatic and impressive, the show puts on a performance a young Cambodian company, full of energy and humour. We highly recommended you the Sokha performance, which is a story about the founder of the NGO school of Phare Ponleu Selpak, where the company artists all come from. Indeed, behind the makeup and smiles, there is a strong social project: young underprivilege Cambodian are taught art professions like circus artist, drawing, music and dressmaking, and are given the opportunity to raise awareness about many social problems.

9/ Fish and seafood meals at Crab Restaurant

In a very authentic setting, Crab Restaurant is probably the best fish and seafood restaurant in Siem Reap. The concept is simple: no menu, you chose a fish or seafood on the go, which is then cooked either on a barbcue or in an oven. The cooking is always perfect and products are always fresh and outstanding: be prepare for a burst of flavor, accompanied by delicious sauces. There is a beautiful social project behind these good meals: young underprivilege Cambodian are taught cooking and hospitality profession.

10/ Flavored Rhum tasting at Harbour Tavern Bar or cocktail tasting at Asana Wooden House

After a long day full of discoveries, you might feel a little tired. What would you say about finishing your day on a fruity note with a cocktail tasting in a traditional wood house? At Asana bar, a.k.a the Old Wooden House, the relaxing atmosphere will drag you into calm discussions. Indeed, even though the place is located close to Pub Street, the noise pollution and commercial music are left outside. You can enjoy this convivial spot with your friends or your partner, before going back in the mad crowd in Pub Street!

For those who have a lot of energy to spend, the Harbour is the perfect alternative to wake up your night owl instinct!

With a setting mixing together a spirit of conviviality, a retro pin-up and hard rock atmosphere, this bar is without a doubt the place to be for everyone looking for new encounters around a well-flavored rhum. Board games are made available and multiples parties are organized to meet other travelers or expat.
